This project focused on the design of a salinity sensor for measuring the salinity of the sea water beneath the Antarctica ice caps which had a unique habitat and salinity range due to the ice caps expelling large amount of salt through brine channels into the ocean below. The project consisted of two PCB boards, a probe to be inserted through a drilled hole in the ice and a controller to calibrate, request and display measurements. The probe used a complex switching array to measure the average resistance between a pair of either gold or titanium electrodes using a voltage sweep, then it…

Salinity Probe: common questions

What microcontroller does the Salinity Probe use?

The Salinity Probe is built around the C1339473, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Salinity Probe PCB?

The Salinity Probe measures 50 × 50 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Salinity Probe?

79 components, from 45 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Salinity Probe design files?

From the Carciax/EEE4022S_Salinity_JCP24-03 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Salinity Probe design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Carciax. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Salinity Probe without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
