About the Mechanical keyboard mac PCB

Mechanical keyboard mac is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by Avaviel, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 408.5 × 95 mm, with 210 components from 24 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the AT90USB1286, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 96 diodes, 86 switches, 15 resistors, 8 capacitors, 1 IC and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

Custom Mechanical Keyboard for Mac built from scratch

I've built 2 keyboards with the same layouts but different components. 1.) Cherry MX Brown Switches, Custom printed keycaps, green LEDs, black / transparent acrylic case 2.) Gateron black switches, chrome- and bronze sprayed keycaps, fully transparent acrylic case and amber LEDs

MCU and Matrix circuit: For the matrix, I just looked at kbfirmware.com, the QMK firmware generator. I connected the keys in the schematic above exactly like the firmware tool defined my cols and rows:

Mechanical keyboard mac: common questions

What microcontroller does the Mechanical keyboard mac use?

The Mechanical keyboard mac is built around the AT90USB1286, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Mechanical keyboard mac PCB?

The Mechanical keyboard mac measures 408.5 × 95 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Mechanical keyboard mac?

210 components, from 24 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Mechanical keyboard mac design files?

From the Avaviel/mechanical_keyboard_mac repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Mechanical keyboard mac design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Avaviel. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Mechanical keyboard mac without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
