About the KiPad PCB

KiPad is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by awkwardbunny, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 81.9 × 126.7 mm, with 78 components from 34 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA32U2-M, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 22 switches, 21 LEDs, 21 diodes, 6 capacitors, 5 resistors and 1 IC.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

Custom PCB + 3D printed keycaps and case.

The PCB was designed in KiCad and manufactured by JLCPCB.

Most of the components have a custom field DIGIKEY, which corresponds to the Digikey part number. Components can be ordered from Digikey easily by doing a BOM export and using Digikey's upload list feature.

The hotswap connectors, key switches, and stablizers do not have Digikey part numbers. Choose ones you like.

KiPad: common questions

What microcontroller does the KiPad use?

The KiPad is built around the ATMEGA32U2-M, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the KiPad PCB?

The KiPad measures 81.9 × 126.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.2 mm thick.

How many components are on the KiPad?

78 components, from 34 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the KiPad design files?

From the awkwardbunny/KiPad repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the KiPad design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with awkwardbunny. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the KiPad without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
