About the Frontpanel PCB

Frontpanel is an open source STM32 PCB design by azonenberg, published on GitHub under the BSD-3-Clause license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 220 × 29 mm, with 115 components from 27 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32L431VxIx, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the TCA6424A and AT30TS74_UDFN. By type, the board carries 38 resistors, 35 diodes, 26 capacitors, 4 connectors, 4 test points and 3 ICs.

From the project

Rack mountable crossbar matrix for T&M trigger in/out signals, allowing dynamic reconfiguration of an experiment without recabling

You probably don't want to build this as is, there's a couple of bugs. May or may not respin later on with fixes, for now I'm just bodging my prototype.

Bodge log at https://docs.google.com/document/d/14ighvhOLtBR-3ShkNhyRGlamA1f7WH5_sXfJCJYxb1o/edit

When finished, it will be a 1U rack-mountable appliance with a TBD number of BNC and/or SMA connectors on the back side for trigger inputs and outputs. Some will be input only, some output only, and some bidirectional. Exact mix is TBD.

Frontpanel: common questions

What microcontroller does the Frontpanel use?

The Frontpanel is built around the STM32L431VxIx, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Frontpanel PCB?

The Frontpanel measures 220 × 29 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Frontpanel?

115 components, from 27 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Frontpanel design files?

From the azonenberg/triggercrossbar repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Frontpanel design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its BSD-3-Clause license, which azonenberg chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Frontpanel without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
