About the MegaProgrammer PCB

MegaProgrammer is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by clydeshaffer, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 89 × 93 mm, with 32 components from 20 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA2560-16AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the FT232RNL-REEL and 5530843-3. By type, the board carries 15 capacitors, 6 resistors, 3 ICs, 3 diodes, 2 connectors and 1 crystal.

From the project

design files for the gametank hardware implementation

The current GameTank version that actually fits into a neat case and looks like a console is Prototype3.

The "Combined" folder contains most of Prototype3, and is named such because certain system sections were previously on separate boards.

Prototype1 had a backplane design where Video, Audio, and Input boards attached into slots perpendicular to the motherboard.

MegaProgrammer: common questions

What microcontroller does the MegaProgrammer use?

The MegaProgrammer is built around the ATMEGA2560-16AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the MegaProgrammer PCB?

The MegaProgrammer measures 89 × 93 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the MegaProgrammer?

32 components, from 20 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the MegaProgrammer design files?

From the clydeshaffer/gametank repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the MegaProgrammer design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with clydeshaffer. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the MegaProgrammer without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
