About the MESC FOC ESC PCB

MESC FOC ESC is an open source STM32 PCB design by davidmolony, published on GitHub under the BSD-3-Clause license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 84 × 66.5 mm, with 183 components from 48 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32F303CB, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the INA181, IR2181, TPS76333, LM5017MR and TPS61041DDC. By type, the board carries 66 resistors, 59 capacitors, 23 diodes, 12 transistors, 10 ICs and 8 connectors.

It belongs with the robotics & motion and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

MESC, Molony ESC, STM32F303 based FOC+BLDC ready, HALL, Encoder, Sensorless, single sides, 2 layer, ~90A @48V

This ESC is intended as a cost optimised alternative to the VESC, by utilising:

Standalone, industry standard footprint gate drivers

Cheap (~2.5$) STM32F303CB microcontroller

Board dimensions 100mmx50mm, so that it can be panelised and manufactured by JLCPCB, or two boards can be combined into one 100mm2 JLCPCB

It is not cross compatible with VESC software, and does not intend to be. VESC has run away with itself in terms of cost, firmware abstraction... in the opinion of this project's author.

MESC FOC ESC: common questions

What microcontroller does the MESC FOC ESC use?

The MESC FOC ESC is built around the STM32F303CB, from the STM32 family.

How big is the MESC FOC ESC PCB?

The MESC FOC ESC measures 84 × 66.5 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the MESC FOC ESC?

183 components, from 48 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the MESC FOC ESC design files?

From the davidmolony/MESC_FOC_ESC repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the MESC FOC ESC design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its BSD-3-Clause license, which davidmolony chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the MESC FOC ESC without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
