About the Fiat brava function controller PCB

Fiat brava function controller is an open source STM32 PCB design by Estebene, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 114.8 × 45 mm, with 44 components from 22 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32C071KBTx, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the AMS1117-3.3, 74AHCT125, BTS50010-1TAD and ULN2002. By type, the board carries 13 resistors, 7 diodes, 6 connectors, 6 capacitors, 5 ICs and 4 relays.

A difficult problem we ran into was that when controlling the fan through PWM it made audible noises. At low PWM frequencies the fan would make a variable whoosing sound and at higher frequencies (~1000Hz) a whining sound could be heard. The previous fan controller used selectable position resistor ladder to determine the power to the fan and thus the speed so I became worried that the motor was not suitable for controlling with PWM. We tried placing a capacitor across the fan to smooth out the switched voltage but this did not help. To help diagnose the problem I used an oscilloscope to…

Fiat brava function controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Fiat brava function controller use?

The Fiat brava function controller is built around the STM32C071KBTx, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Fiat brava function controller PCB?

The Fiat brava function controller measures 114.8 × 45 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Fiat brava function controller?

44 components, from 22 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Fiat brava function controller design files?

From the Estebene/fiat-brava-function-controller-pcb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Fiat brava function controller design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Estebene. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Fiat brava function controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
