About the Strobe main PCB

Strobe main is an open source STM32 PCB design by FLRHW, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 100 × 100 mm, with 131 components from 52 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32G431K8T6, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the LM217MDT, NCP1117IST33T3G, IRS2184, TSV912IDT and ISO1541DR. By type, the board carries 57 resistors, 30 capacitors, 18 diodes, 9 connectors, 8 ICs and 5 transistors.

It belongs with the audio and power & battery designs in this gallery.

1 kV strobe - main board

While defining the project scope, I had to decide if I'd use the good old Xenon bulb or move to LEDs, as these have greatly evolved and are ubiquitous nowadays, making their way to commercial strobes (https://www.martin.com/en/products/atomic-3000-led). I have decided to stick to vintage tech, as in my mind this would bring more interesting power electronics challenges due to high voltages and high peak currents required when the lamp is ionised.

Strobe main: common questions

What microcontroller does the Strobe main use?

The Strobe main is built around the STM32G431K8T6, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Strobe main PCB?

The Strobe main measures 100 × 100 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 2.278 mm thick.

How many components are on the Strobe main?

131 components, from 52 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Strobe main design files?

From the FLRHW/Strobe_main repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Strobe main design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which FLRHW chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Strobe main without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
