About the FireKey Hardware PCB

FireKey Hardware is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by FrederikWolter, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 99.7 × 99.1 mm, with 65 components from 8 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_Pro_Micro_USB-C, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 17 LEDs, 15 diodes, 15 capacitors, 1 IC, 1 switch and 1 resistor.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

Student project to create a macro keyboard. This is the hardware part.

This student research project named FireKey is part of the winter semester 2022 and summer semester 2023 in the Applied Computer Science course at DHBW Mannheim. The aim is to create a macro keyboard with individually configurable keys that allow the input of simple key combinations up to more complex sequences.

This repository is used for developing the hardware of FireKey. The corresponding firmware is developed in the FireKeyFirmware repository and the configuration software in FireKeyConfigurator.

FireKey Hardware: common questions

What microcontroller does the FireKey Hardware use?

The FireKey Hardware is built around the Arduino_Pro_Micro_USB-C, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the FireKey Hardware PCB?

The FireKey Hardware measures 99.7 × 99.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the FireKey Hardware?

65 components, from 8 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the FireKey Hardware design files?

From the FrederikWolter/FireKey_Hardware repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the FireKey Hardware design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with FrederikWolter. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the FireKey Hardware without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
