About the Lu.i neuron PCB

Lu.i neuron is an open source PCB design by giant-axon, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 98.5 × 59.8 mm, with 88 components from 34 distinct parts.

Other key parts include the MCP6004 and LM339. By type, the board carries 43 resistors, 12 transistors, 8 capacitors, 7 diodes, 4 connectors and 4 switches.

Lu.i is an electronic neuron circuit mimicking and illustrating the basic dynamics of real, biological neurons. The printed circuit board (PCB) features a configurable, fully analog implementation of the leaky integrate-and-fire model and visualizes the internal state, the membrane potential, through a VU-meter-style chain of LEDs. The neuron emits a short pulse whenever the membrane potential crosses a predefined threshold voltage. Neurons communicate by exchanging these spikes. Multiple boards can be connected via jumper wires to form networks.

The KiCad project lives in the giant-axon/lu.i-neuron-pcb repository on GitHub; these links point at the commit this page was built from.

Lu.i neuron: common questions

How big is the Lu.i neuron PCB?

The Lu.i neuron measures 98.5 × 59.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Lu.i neuron?

88 components, from 34 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Lu.i neuron design files?

From the giant-axon/lu.i-neuron-pcb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Lu.i neuron design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which giant-axon chose for the repository.
