About the Minimus-Prime PCB

Minimus-Prime is an open source NXP PCB design by HologramEducation, published on GitHub under the CC-BY-4.0 license. It is a board measuring 25.4 × 33 mm, with 61 components from 27 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the MKL17Z256VFM4, from the NXP family. Other key parts include the TLV700, eSIM, SARA-U260 and SIM-CARD-HOLDER. By type, the board carries 24 resistors, 18 capacitors, 7 diodes, 5 ICs, 3 transistors and 1 crystal.

From the project

An experiment to shrink cellular connectivity

This is an experiment to shrink the logic and support circuitry around a cellular modem to the bare minimum and offer them as a surface mount solderable board. This design will be tested as a lightweight hardware device to connect to Hologram services.

This device is meant to work with uBlox cellular modems and the Hologram Global SIM card. To get a free SIM and 1 MB of data per month on the cellular plan, check out the Developer Plan

Minimus-Prime: common questions

What microcontroller does the Minimus-Prime use?

The Minimus-Prime is built around the MKL17Z256VFM4, from the NXP family.

How big is the Minimus-Prime PCB?

The Minimus-Prime measures 25.4 × 33 mm and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Minimus-Prime?

61 components, from 27 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Minimus-Prime design files?

From the HologramEducation/Minimus-Prime repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Minimus-Prime design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC-BY-4.0 license, which HologramEducation chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Minimus-Prime without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug NXP firmware against it before you order a PCB.
