About the Red sprite water monitor PCB

Red sprite water monitor is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by kgolding, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 90.4 × 66.4 mm, with 15 components from 8 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATTINY816-S, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 4 resistors, 3 connectors, 2 battery holders, 2 switches, 2 diodes and 1 IC.

It belongs with the usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

From the project

A battery operated device to indicate when a plant pot needs watering, in the shape of the Red Sprite logo, design as a learn to solder project.

The following components must be correctly orientated:

- U1 Match the dot on the corner of the chip to the white triangle on the PCB - D1 (right hand LED) should have the little green marks to the right (gnd) - D2 (left hand LED) should have the little green marks to the left (gnd) - Battery holders match the positive + / negative - ends

Red sprite water monitor: common questions

What microcontroller does the Red sprite water monitor use?

The Red sprite water monitor is built around the ATTINY816-S, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Red sprite water monitor PCB?

The Red sprite water monitor measures 90.4 × 66.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Red sprite water monitor?

15 components, from 8 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Red sprite water monitor design files?

From the kgolding/red-sprite-water-monitor repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Red sprite water monitor design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with kgolding. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Red sprite water monitor without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
