NSSL EFM Redesign

This repository contains all files and relevant information for the electric field meter (EFM) designed for NSSL. This instrument has been in existance for many years, but beginning in approximatley 2019/2020 Leeman Geophysical was contracted to help design and implement the next generation of the device. This README should be a living document keeping the most current and relevant information on the assembly, operation, and programming of the instrument.

NSSL EFM Charge Amplifier: common questions

What microcontroller does the NSSL EFM Charge Amplifier use?

The NSSL EFM Charge Amplifier is built around the 1-0000748, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the NSSL EFM Charge Amplifier PCB?

The NSSL EFM Charge Amplifier measures 44.5 × 31.8 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the NSSL EFM Charge Amplifier?

27 components, from 19 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the NSSL EFM Charge Amplifier design files?

From the LeemanGeophysicalLLC/NSSL_EFM repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the NSSL EFM Charge Amplifier design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with LeemanGeophysicalLLC. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the NSSL EFM Charge Amplifier without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
