About the NSSL EFM Analog PCB

NSSL EFM Analog is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by LeemanGeophysicalLLC, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 44.5 × 31.8 mm, with 27 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the 1-0000758, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the 1-0000419 and 1-0000414. By type, the board carries 16 capacitors, 3 ICs, 3 resistors, 2 diodes, 1 crystal and 1 connector.

It belongs with the audio and test & measurement designs in this gallery.

From the project

Analog PCB/charge amplifier for the NSSL EFM

The analog charge amplifier performs the actual coulomb counting for the electric field measurement and filters the signal before passing it to the rotating electronics for digitization, synchronization, and logging. This board closely follows the design of the original instrument and includes a small microcontroller that allows temperature- independent control of the filter's cutoff frequency.

NSSL EFM Analog: common questions

What microcontroller does the NSSL EFM Analog use?

The NSSL EFM Analog is built around the 1-0000758, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the NSSL EFM Analog PCB?

The NSSL EFM Analog measures 44.5 × 31.8 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the NSSL EFM Analog?

27 components, from 15 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the NSSL EFM Analog design files?

From the LeemanGeophysicalLLC/NSSL_EFM_Analog_PCB repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the NSSL EFM Analog design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which LeemanGeophysicalLLC chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the NSSL EFM Analog without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
