About the Evoluent better PCB

Evoluent better is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by mon, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 35 × 54 mm, with 30 components from 19 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the C112161, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the C697975, - and C5148692. By type, the board carries 10 capacitors, 9 resistors, 5 connectors, 4 ICs, 1 transistor and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the sensors designs in this gallery.

PCBs using better sensor for Evoluent VerticalMouse products

Let's face it - the sensor that Evoluent ships with the VerticalMouse series of mice is at best "OK" and recently, dreadful. While my VM4 and the wireless VMC was "fine, but office-spec", the VMD jitters, jumps, and cannot keep up with even moderately fast moves across the mousepad.

So, I created this drop-in replacement PCB to upgrade the sensor to a gaming grade PMW3360DM, using an atmega32u4 and Arduino.

Evoluent better: common questions

What microcontroller does the Evoluent better use?

The Evoluent better is built around the C112161, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Evoluent better PCB?

The Evoluent better measures 35 × 54 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Evoluent better?

30 components, from 19 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Evoluent better design files?

From the mon/evoluent_better_pcb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Evoluent better design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which mon chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Evoluent better without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
