About the Techrom tray PCB

Techrom tray is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by niaid, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 30 × 70 mm, with 18 components from 16 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ARDUINO_NANO_V3.X, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 8 connectors, 5 resistors, 2 capacitors, 1 module, 1 transistor and 1 diode.

It belongs with the usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

From the project

A complete project to enable direct software control over the waste tray position of Tecan's Te-Chrom microchromatography module

Primary authors: Elihu Ihms and Nathan Jones Organizational contact: Elihu Ihms (elihu.ihms AT nih.gov) Date of release: August 10, 2026 Version: 1.0 License details: See LICENSE file

Description: This repository contains firmware, hardware files, and host-side control tools for automating insertion and retraction of the waste tray on a Te-Chrom microchromatography module. The Te-Chrom is an optional module sold by Tecan for use with Tecan EVO and Fluent automated liquid handlers.

Techrom tray: common questions

What microcontroller does the Techrom tray use?

The Techrom tray is built around the ARDUINO_NANO_V3.X, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Techrom tray PCB?

The Techrom tray measures 30 × 70 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Techrom tray?

18 components, from 16 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Techrom tray design files?

From the niaid/techrom-tray repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Techrom tray design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which niaid chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Techrom tray without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
