About the Chess PCB

Chess is an open source PCB design by nicksan222, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 8-layer board measuring 320 × 360 mm, with 303 components from 16 distinct parts.

Other key parts include the TCA9554DWR, SN74AHCT125DR and SK9822-EC20. By type, the board carries 139 capacitors, 73 ICs, 13 switches, 7 test points, 3 connectors and 2 resistors.

It belongs with the wearables designs in this gallery.

From the project

Make your move. Watch the board come alive. ♟️✨

Start at definition/board.py: power, controls, 64 squares, eight Hall banks, and the serpentine LED chain. load() returns a pcbnew.BOARD. There is no parallel PCB model, geometry enum, placement aggregate, or adapter. Python generates the board automatically; editing generated files is not authoring.

The fourth top-level folder is typing declarations only, not another implementation of KiCad geometry. Subpackages organize responsibilities; their init.py` files do not provide wrapper APIs.

Chess: common questions

How big is the Chess PCB?

The Chess measures 320 × 360 mm, has 8 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Chess?

303 components, from 16 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Chess design files?

From the nicksan222/chess repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Chess design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which nicksan222 chose for the repository.
