Building a Mechanical Keyboard From Scratch

About a year ago, I was looking into getting a new mechanical keyboard with linear switches. I had grown tired of the name brand keyboards like Corsair and Logitech who did not lubricate their switches. This made each keypress loud and unsatisfying. After doing some research, I decided to build my own instead of buying it. Most people who build custom keyboards buy a predesigned PCB. However, I wanted to design the PCB myself because I thought it would be fun. In the end, that proved true and I learned a lot about the inner workings of mechanical keyboards and PCB design.

Keycool84keyboard: common questions

What microcontroller does the Keycool84keyboard use?

The Keycool84keyboard is built around the Arduino_Micro_Socket, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Keycool84keyboard PCB?

The Keycool84keyboard measures 337.4 × 120.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Keycool84keyboard?

169 components, from 9 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Keycool84keyboard design files?

From the overlordpro-sys/keycool84keyboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Keycool84keyboard design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which overlordpro-sys chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Keycool84keyboard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
