6500/1 microcontroller ROM dump board

Do you have a 6500/1 microcontroller made by MOS, Rockwell, or NCR? (and possibly others) Do you want to dump the contents of the ROM? Here's a board for you!

This design is derived from work by Jim Brain documented here with design files here.

The original design was built on a breadboard. I've turned this into a simple PC board to save you the effort of wiring it up. Along the way, I ported the code to another MCU (ATmega644) mostly because that is what I had. I also edited the code to make it slightly more reliable by putting out more clock cycles while RESET# is held low. (Although it…

6500-1-brain dumper: common questions

What microcontroller does the 6500-1-brain dumper use?

The 6500-1-brain dumper is built around the ATmega644PA-P, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the 6500-1-brain dumper PCB?

The 6500-1-brain dumper measures 76.2 × 76.2 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the 6500-1-brain dumper?

30 components, from 23 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the 6500-1-brain dumper design files?

From the schlae/6500-1-brain-dumper repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the 6500-1-brain dumper design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with schlae. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the 6500-1-brain dumper without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
