About the GamesMachine PCB

GamesMachine is an open source PCB design by sideburn, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 160 × 90 mm, with 80 components from 27 distinct parts.

Other key parts include the 7413, 7472, 7490, 7447 and 7425. By type, the board carries 30 resistors, 16 diodes, 12 switches, 9 ICs, 4 capacitors and 1 fuse.

Random Number Games Machine — Sideburn Studios rev 2.0, from Practical Electronics Dec 1976 (D. Burn)

KiCad recreation of "Games Machine — a programmed random number generator" by D. Burn, Practical Electronics, December 1976 (pp. 969–975). PCB by Sideburn Studios.

A TTL-logic random number generator with four selectable modes:

Randomness comes from an avalanche-noise transistor (TR1) feeding a two-stage amplifier (TR2, TR3), squared by a 7413 Schmitt trigger, and gated into a pair of 7490 decade counters while a 2N2646 UJT relaxation oscillator (TR4) free-runs at 3–4 s. Because the operator's press and the oscillator phase are uncorrelated, the stopping point is unpredictable. Game ranges…

GamesMachine: common questions

How big is the GamesMachine PCB?

The GamesMachine measures 160 × 90 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the GamesMachine?

80 components, from 27 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the GamesMachine design files?

From the sideburn/GamesMachine repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the GamesMachine design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with sideburn. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
