About the KilnHat PCB

KilnHat is an open source PCB design by tanaes, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 65 × 49 mm, with 42 components from 20 distinct parts.

Other key parts include the MAX31856. By type, the board carries 14 resistors, 9 connectors, 9 diodes, 5 capacitors, 3 transistors and 1 IC.

From the project

PCB for running a kiln from a Raspberry Pi

Has three MOSFET channels for controlling a mechanical safety relay, an SSR, and a fan. On-board thermocouple amplifier. Includes outputs for digital displays, addressable LEDs, and an I2C port.

This is not yet a true 'hat' as I haven't yet implemented the full requirements! However, my goal is to test the initial prototypes and add the required I2C EEPROM and over-voltage protection circuitry in a subsequent revision.

KilnHat: common questions

How big is the KilnHat PCB?

The KilnHat measures 65 × 49 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the KilnHat?

42 components, from 20 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the KilnHat design files?

From the tanaes/KilnHat repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the KilnHat design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which tanaes chose for the repository.
