About the Breath controller PCB

Breath controller is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by vpatkov, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 66 × 25.4 mm, with 26 components from 16 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA16U4-A, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the MPXV4006. By type, the board carries 13 capacitors, 5 resistors, 2 ICs, 2 connectors, 2 inductors and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the audio designs in this gallery.

From the project

USB-MIDI Breath Controller

A device that converts breath pressure to MIDI data.

The mouthpiece has an adjustable valve for drain control.

The LED's brightness is proportional to the output MIDI value. Until the USB interface is successfully configured the LED is fully on.

During initialization, the auto-zeroing of the pressure sensor is performed. So, don't blow into the mouthpiece when plugging the device.

Breath controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Breath controller use?

The Breath controller is built around the ATMEGA16U4-A, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Breath controller PCB?

The Breath controller measures 66 × 25.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Breath controller?

26 components, from 16 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Breath controller design files?

From the vpatkov/breath-controller repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Breath controller design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with vpatkov. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Breath controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
