AI & Customer Data Policy
Effective date: September 18, 2026
HardLabs uses AI systems as part of certain hardware and firmware engineering workflows.
This policy explains how Customer Content interacts with AI functionality.
1. AI-Assisted Functionality
HardLabs may use AI for tasks including:
- interpreting component datasheets;
- extracting hardware behavior from technical documentation;
- creating or assisting with simulation models;
- generating component or peripheral models;
- analyzing hardware configuration;
- analyzing firmware behavior;
- generating or proposing tests;
- assisting debugging;
- generating code or configuration;
- identifying potential integration problems;
- summarizing technical findings.
2. AI Providers
HardLabs currently uses commercial/API services provided by:
- OpenAI;
- Anthropic.
HardLabs may introduce other providers in the future, in which case the Subprocessor List will be updated where applicable.
3. Customer Ownership
Customer retains ownership of Customer Content.
Uploading or processing:
- PCB designs;
- firmware;
- schematics;
- source code;
- binaries;
- BOMs;
- datasheets;
- technical documentation;
does not transfer ownership of those materials to HardLabs.
4. Training
HardLabs does not use Customer Content to train generalized or shared AI models unless Customer expressly opts in.
HardLabs uses commercial/API AI services intended for business use and does not intentionally opt Customer Content into generalized provider model training.
HardLabs may use de-identified operational data to improve its own Services where doing so does not reveal Customer Confidential Information.
5. Data Minimization
Where technically reasonable, HardLabs sends an AI provider only the information needed for the requested operation.
For example, a technical workflow may provide an AI model with:
- relevant datasheet content;
- component metadata;
- selected firmware information;
- configuration;
- technical context necessary to perform the requested analysis.
6. Provider Access
AI providers may process transmitted information to generate requested output and to provide and secure their services according to their commercial terms and data-processing agreements.
Current AI providers are listed on the HardLabs Subprocessor page.
7. Human Access
HardLabs personnel may access Customer Content when reasonably necessary to:
- provide customer-requested support;
- investigate a technical issue;
- investigate a security issue;
- maintain the Services;
- comply with law.
Access is limited according to operational need and confidentiality obligations.
8. Customer Isolation
HardLabs does not make one customer's confidential Customer Content available to other customers.
A customer's proprietary design, firmware, schematics, or source files will not intentionally be exposed to another customer through the Services.
9. AI Output
AI-generated and AI-assisted output can be wrong.
AI output should be treated as engineering assistance and not as authoritative verification that hardware or firmware is:
- correct;
- complete;
- safe;
- regulatory compliant;
- ready for manufacture;
- ready for deployment.
Independent testing and engineering review remain necessary.
