A 4-layer power and control board for a Ricor K508N cryocooler. It does two jobs, both controlled over I²C:

1. Supplies the cryocooler's power. A TI TPS55288 buck-boost converter steps the 24 V rail down to an adjustable 12–20 V. 2. Sets the cryocooler's target temperature. An Analog Devices AD5258 digital potentiometer acts as the cryocooler's set-point resistor, around 170 K.

Cryocooler board: common questions

What microcontroller does the Cryocooler board use?

The Cryocooler board is built around the MOL Pico 4, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Cryocooler board?

The Cryocooler board measures 58 × 49 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Cryocooler board?

39 components, from 27 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Cryocooler board design files?

From the 8423/cryocooler-board repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Cryocooler board design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with 8423. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Cryocooler board without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
