About the ActiveLoad PCB

ActiveLoad is an open source STM32 PCB design by ahessling, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 50 × 100 mm, with 75 components from 43 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32F072C8, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the MAX3207E, DS18B20, MCP6002, LM317AEMP and LM9036M-3.3. By type, the board carries 28 resistors, 26 capacitors, 6 ICs, 3 connectors, 3 inductors and 2 switches.

From the project

Small 12 Watt Active Load (dummy load) with STM32 microcontroller

Features: Power supply from around 3.3V to 40V Should be powered by device under test Alternative power supply via USB Maximum dissipated power: Around 12W permanently at room temperature Maximum current: 3A Robust (protected from overvoltage, overcurrent and overtemperature conditions) Device under test should be connected via banana plugs or screw terminals A PC should be able to monitor the actual current and control the desired current via USB Small display to monitor actual and setpoint current Rotary encoder to change setpoint current Small (5×10 cm) Measure temperature at heatsink

ActiveLoad: common questions

What microcontroller does the ActiveLoad use?

The ActiveLoad is built around the STM32F072C8, from the STM32 family.

How big is the ActiveLoad PCB?

The ActiveLoad measures 50 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the ActiveLoad?

75 components, from 43 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the ActiveLoad design files?

From the ahessling/ActiveLoad repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the ActiveLoad design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which ahessling chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the ActiveLoad without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
