About the P1-reader PCB

P1-reader is an open source ESP32 PCB design by Albert221, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 63.9 × 24 mm, with 12 components from 12 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32 left, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the 4N35. By type, the board carries 4 capacitors, 3 connectors, 3 resistors, 1 IC and 1 diode.

It belongs with the iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

A simple device connecting a Seeed ESP32-C3 to a P1 port of the electricity meter. Based on ESPHome.

In kicad/MJ3235-66-0 directory you should put a 3D model of the RJ12 connector that you can get from here. I'm not sharing it as its license doesn't allow model file redistribution.

In PCB, there is 1K pull-up resistor between Data and 3V3 missing.

- RJ12 connector - Electrolytic capacitors 100uF, 10uF, 1uF - Ceramic capacitor 100nF - Resistors 56Ω, 100Ω, 200Ω, 1kΩ - Amber LED 3mm - Optocoupler 4N35 - 2x 1x7 header socket (for connecting to ESP, chip facing down, USB to the edge of PCB)

P1-reader: common questions

What microcontroller does the P1-reader use?

The P1-reader is built around the ESP32 left, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the P1-reader PCB?

The P1-reader measures 63.9 × 24 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the P1-reader?

12 components, from 12 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the P1-reader design files?

From the Albert221/p1-reader repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the P1-reader design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Albert221. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the P1-reader without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
