About the Progshield PCB

Progshield is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by ALXCO-Hardware, published on GitHub under the CC-BY-4.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 121.9 × 81.3 mm, with 14 components from 10 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_Mega2560_Shield, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the SST39SF040. By type, the board carries 6 resistors, 2 connectors, 2 diodes, 1 IC, 1 switch and 1 capacitor.

The open hardware GB/GBC cartridge system

Squareboi is an open hardware cartridge system for the Game Boy Color, made to be as accessible and DIY-friendly as possible. Using a handful of off-the-shelf components, it provides the same functionality as an original cartridge, compatible with the majority of programs. Additionally, an Arduino-based programmer allows for easy transfer of games and save data.

Progshield: common questions

What microcontroller does the Progshield use?

The Progshield is built around the Arduino_Mega2560_Shield, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Progshield PCB?

The Progshield measures 121.9 × 81.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Progshield?

14 components, from 10 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Progshield design files?

From the ALXCO-Hardware/squareboi repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Progshield design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC-BY-4.0 license, which ALXCO-Hardware chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Progshield without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
