About the KiCAD Keyboard65Percent PCB

KiCAD Keyboard65Percent is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by AndrewMinWu, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 304.8 × 102.9 mm, with 157 components from 83 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the MCU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the PRTR5V0U2X. By type, the board carries 69 switches, 68 diodes, 8 capacitors, 6 resistors, 2 ICs and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

Custom 65% Keyboard designed in KiCad, using an ATmega32U4 and QMK (C) firmware

When I was 15, I bought my first custom mechanical keyboard: a QK60 from Qwertykeys alongside Gateron yellow switches and some cheap keycaps from amazon. However, I encountered a problem when I accidently took out the PCB with the JST connector still plugged in, ripping the socket on the daughterboard (where the usb-c was). Devastated, this experience essentially brought me into PCB design through online guides and communities. 2 years later, with more PCB design experience, I decided to create my own 65% keyboard (my personal favorite form factor. Who uses the numpad anyways!?).

KiCAD Keyboard65Percent: common questions

What microcontroller does the KiCAD Keyboard65Percent use?

The KiCAD Keyboard65Percent is built around the MCU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the KiCAD Keyboard65Percent PCB?

The KiCAD Keyboard65Percent measures 304.8 × 102.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the KiCAD Keyboard65Percent?

157 components, from 83 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the KiCAD Keyboard65Percent design files?

From the AndrewMinWu/KiCAD_Keyboard65Percent repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the KiCAD Keyboard65Percent design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with AndrewMinWu. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the KiCAD Keyboard65Percent without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
