About the Kbic65 PCB

Kbic65 is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by b-karl, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 313.3 × 131.6 mm, with 150 components from 11 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ProMicro, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 79 LEDs and 1 IC.

It belongs with the keyboards, iot & wireless and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

65% keyboard PCB with ProMicro footprint. Through-hole kit design with focus on wireless.

Bottom of keyboard has two alternatives. A design with glass rims inspired by my grandfather's glasses and a dithered image of the sun from the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory. Included below is also a guide on creating dithered PCB art.

- Reduced copper coverage on top of PCB and bottom plate, and no copper switch plate to improve Bluetooth signal - Plate mounted with screws, the PCB contains drilled holes large enough to fit M2 spacers. I.e. the PCB is only connected to the plate via the switches. - Tried to avoid vias, but have one (that I probably could have skipped) - Since the bottom…

Kbic65: common questions

What microcontroller does the Kbic65 use?

The Kbic65 is built around the ProMicro, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Kbic65 PCB?

The Kbic65 measures 313.3 × 131.6 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Kbic65?

150 components, from 11 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Kbic65 design files?

From the b-karl/KBIC65 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Kbic65 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which b-karl chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Kbic65 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
