Component video (YPbPr) output for the ZX Spectrum computer

The ZX Spectrum in its original form produces a radio frequency signal that can be fed into an analog TV. The quality of this signal is very poor, but this can be improved by a simple modification that will make the ZX Spectrum output a composite video signal instead. While this is actually better, it is nowhere near good. To bring the video quality to the next level, this modification will produce a component video signal (YPbPr) that should be as good as an analog signal can possible get. This video signal can be used either directly with a TV that has a YPbPr input, or it can be passed…

ZX-Spectrum-Component-Video: common questions

What microcontroller does the ZX-Spectrum-Component-Video use?

The ZX-Spectrum-Component-Video is built around the 10M02SCE144, from the FPGA family.

How big is the ZX-Spectrum-Component-Video PCB?

The ZX-Spectrum-Component-Video measures 50.8 × 33 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the ZX-Spectrum-Component-Video?

78 components, from 24 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the ZX-Spectrum-Component-Video design files?

From the c0pperdragon/ZX-Spectrum-Component-Video repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the ZX-Spectrum-Component-Video design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with c0pperdragon. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the ZX-Spectrum-Component-Video without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug FPGA firmware against it before you order a PCB.
