About the WindSensor PCB

WindSensor is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by curiouselectric, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 44.9 × 44.9 mm, with 42 components from 27 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA328P-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the TSV911XXLX. By type, the board carries 12 resistors, 11 capacitors, 9 connectors, 4 diodes, 3 ICs and 2 switches.

It belongs with the sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

A DIY interface circuit for anemometers and wind vanes

This connects to various anemometers and wind vanes and provides a serial interface for averaged data from the pulses.

The problem with measuring wind anemometers and wind vane is that they constantly need to be checked. You need to know at all times when pulses have come in and which direction the wind vane is facing. This requires a bit of microcontroller time and processing. This unit is designed to solve that. Wire up your vane and anemometer. Power the unit up. Then it will save the averaged data for you. You can then get hold of the data through serial requests and process as you need.

WindSensor: common questions

What microcontroller does the WindSensor use?

The WindSensor is built around the ATMEGA328P-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the WindSensor PCB?

The WindSensor measures 44.9 × 44.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the WindSensor?

42 components, from 27 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the WindSensor design files?

From the curiouselectric/WindSensor repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the WindSensor design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with curiouselectric. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the WindSensor without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
