About the Cube64 SMD PCB

Cube64 SMD is an open source PIC PCB design by darthcloud, published on GitHub under the GPL-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 38 × 21 mm, with 40 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the PIC18F24Q10, from the PIC family. Other key parts include the LTC3203B-1. By type, the board carries 28 resistors, 5 capacitors, 4 connectors, 2 ICs and 1 diode.

A secondary goal of this project is to more thoroughly reverse engineer the protocols involved and create reusable libraries for interfacing PIC microcontrollers to N64 and GameCube devices. The very basics of reverse engineering the two protocols were done before Micah (@scanlime) started this project, but she quickly discovered that there's much more to the protocol. We believe this project may be the first one to completely reverse engineer the protocol used by standard N64…

Cube64 SMD: common questions

What microcontroller does the Cube64 SMD use?

The Cube64 SMD is built around the PIC18F24Q10, from the PIC family.

How big is the Cube64 SMD PCB?

The Cube64 SMD measures 38 × 21 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Cube64 SMD?

40 components, from 15 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Cube64 SMD design files?

From the darthcloud/cube64-dx repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Cube64 SMD design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-2.0 license, which darthcloud chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Cube64 SMD without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug PIC firmware against it before you order a PCB.
