About the Tool-Ponder PCB

Tool-Ponder is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by DiagnosticsMonkey, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 40 × 50 mm, with 118 components from 26 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2350_80QFN, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the NCP1117-3.3_SOT223, W25Q64JVXGIQ TR and 18012115411H. By type, the board carries 48 resistors, 32 capacitors, 15 connectors, 10 diodes, 9 ICs and 2 switches.

From the project

Isolated Hexa UART-USB bridge based on the RP2350 - Named after Ponder Stibbons, Head of Inadvisably Applied Magic, and Reader in Invisible Writings.

Ponder is designed to act as 6, electrically isolated, UART to USB bridges using the RP2035B. Connect the board to your PC, and be served 6, driverless, COM-ports or ttyACM devices.

Documentation is captured in Markdown and is available in /docs, rendered using docsify here.

All of the design files are included in this repository.

Generated outputs such as Schematic, BoM, and Gerbers are all included.

Tool-Ponder: common questions

What microcontroller does the Tool-Ponder use?

The Tool-Ponder is built around the RP2350_80QFN, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Tool-Ponder PCB?

The Tool-Ponder measures 40 × 50 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Tool-Ponder?

118 components, from 26 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Tool-Ponder design files?

From the DiagnosticsMonkey/Tool-Ponder repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Tool-Ponder design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with DiagnosticsMonkey. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Tool-Ponder without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
