QMK AT90USB1286 Mechanical TKL Keyboard - Retrofit for Kogan Mechanical TKL

ec0board is a personal project to replace the dead control board in my otherwise landfill Kogan TKL mechanical keyboard. It was designed to occupy the exact same physical dimensions, and have the exact same key switch spacing as the original board, however has a much more powerful user-controlled MCU. The MCU used is an AT90USB1286, chosen for the number of GPIOs, enabling NKRO to be achieved. It uses a diode matrix to connect the key switches, and takes Cherry-MX compatible key switches (I use browns). Support is being added to the open source QMK firmware for this board, as the intention is…

Ec0board: common questions

What microcontroller does the Ec0board use?

The Ec0board is built around the AT90USB1286, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Ec0board PCB?

The Ec0board measures 348.1 × 120.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Ec0board?

368 components, from 105 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Ec0board design files?

From the digitalrane/ec0board repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Ec0board design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with digitalrane. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Ec0board without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
