About the PBITzBackplane PCB

PBITzBackplane is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by dumaiss, published on GitHub under the SHL-2.1 license. It is a 6-layer board measuring 243.8 × 243.8 mm, with 38 components from 12 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the A 08-LC-TT, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 17 capacitors, 12 resistors, 7 connectors, 1 IC and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

Code, documentation and schematics for the pBITz backplane and associated assets

pBITz is the shared hardware platform used by the Coffee Series of homebrew computers. It provides the common physical and electrical foundation — backplane, power control, service interfaces, reusable KiCad assets, test hardware, and platform tools — while leaving the personality of each machine to its CPU board and machine-specific peripherals.

The goal is not to define one rigid computer architecture. Instead, pBITz provides a practical common platform on which very different machines can be built: 8-bit, 16-bit, and eventually wider systems can share the same mechanical infrastructure…

PBITzBackplane: common questions

What microcontroller does the PBITzBackplane use?

The PBITzBackplane is built around the A 08-LC-TT, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the PBITzBackplane PCB?

The PBITzBackplane measures 243.8 × 243.8 mm, has 6 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the PBITzBackplane?

38 components, from 12 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the PBITzBackplane design files?

From the dumaiss/pBITzPlatform repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the PBITzBackplane design in my own project?

It is published under SHL-2.1, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the PBITzBackplane without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
