About the Df pill PCB

Df pill is an open source STM32 PCB design by epchain, published on GitHub under the Unlicense license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 30 × 68.5 mm, with 58 components from 34 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the STM32F103C8Tx, from the STM32 family. Other key parts include the MIC5219-3.3YM5 and USBLC6-2SC6. By type, the board carries 15 capacitors, 13 resistors, 11 jumpers, 8 diodes, 4 connectors and 3 ICs.

From the project

Kicad EDA project of a general purpose STM32F103Cx board

This project was extracted from another, complex device project which originally targeted cheap STM32F103C8T6 board known as "bluepill" as main board. However, it soon became apparent that bluepill has shortcomings with USB interface, which was meant to be primary communication channel.

tl;dr bluepill cannot work with USB while being externally powered. It is designed to be powered with USB host only. Some bluepill boards have hardware bugs.

Df pill: common questions

What microcontroller does the Df pill use?

The Df pill is built around the STM32F103C8Tx, from the STM32 family.

How big is the Df pill PCB?

The Df pill measures 30 × 68.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Df pill?

58 components, from 34 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Df pill design files?

From the epchain/df-pill repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Df pill design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Unlicense license, which epchain chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Df pill without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
