About the Keybird42 PCB

Keybird42 is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by fanf2, published on GitHub under the Custom license license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 420.3 × 95.3 mm, with 174 components from 89 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040-Tiny, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. By type, the board carries 86 switches, 86 diodes, 1 IC and 1 connector.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

The main niggle about keybird69 is the lack of gap between delete & return, and the function column. Sculpted keycaps go some way to mitigating it, but not completely.

I played around with layouts that have a separated arrow cluster and function columns (like a reduced 1800 layout), but they make it harder to use the arrow keys with the thumb on a modifier.

Keybird42: common questions

What microcontroller does the Keybird42 use?

The Keybird42 is built around the RP2040-Tiny, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Keybird42 PCB?

The Keybird42 measures 420.3 × 95.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Keybird42?

174 components, from 89 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Keybird42 design files?

From the fanf2/kbd repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Keybird42 design in my own project?

It is published under Custom license, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the Keybird42 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
