About the Lightning Detector PCB

Lightning Detector is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by flooklab, published on GitHub under the Custom license license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 73.7 × 78.7 mm, with 37 components from 14 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino_Nano, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 14 diodes, 7 switches, 4 capacitors, 4 resistors, 3 connectors and 2 battery holders.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, sensors and wearables designs in this gallery.

From the project

An experimental open hardware project for early notification about approaching thunderstorm activity

Lightning Detector is an experimental open hardware project for early notification about approaching thunderstorm activity. It is a battery-powered (1x or 2x CR2032) device with low power consumption in mind and is based on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE as microcontroller unit (MCU) and the AS3935 "Franklin Lightning Sensor" chip by AMS/ScioSense as main detector element.

Lightning Detector: common questions

What microcontroller does the Lightning Detector use?

The Lightning Detector is built around the Arduino_Nano, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Lightning Detector PCB?

The Lightning Detector measures 73.7 × 78.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.686 mm thick.

How many components are on the Lightning Detector?

37 components, from 14 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Lightning Detector design files?

From the flooklab/Lightning_Detector repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Lightning Detector design in my own project?

It is published under Custom license, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the Lightning Detector without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
