About the USB-Powered fan-Controller PCB

USB-Powered fan-Controller is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by FoxhoodDesigns, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 38 × 31.5 mm, with 44 components from 20 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATtiny214-SS, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the LMR62421XMF. By type, the board carries 16 resistors, 10 diodes, 8 capacitors, 4 connectors, 2 ICs and 2 transistors.

It belongs with the power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

A small Fan controller that controls 12V (case)fans from 5V via a switching regulator

During operation one can set the speed of the fan anywhere between 40 and 100 percent. Pressing the encoder SW causes the controller to halt the fan till pressed again

If during operation the FAN either halts OR speeds up too much (wip), the controller will immediately shut off power and remain locked till it got power-cycled as a protection measure against sudden jamming/defects.

USB-Powered fan-Controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the USB-Powered fan-Controller use?

The USB-Powered fan-Controller is built around the ATtiny214-SS, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the USB-Powered fan-Controller PCB?

The USB-Powered fan-Controller measures 38 × 31.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the USB-Powered fan-Controller?

44 components, from 20 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the USB-Powered fan-Controller design files?

From the FoxhoodDesigns/USB-Powered-fan-Controller repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the USB-Powered fan-Controller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which FoxhoodDesigns chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the USB-Powered fan-Controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
