About the Ergodox extended PCB

Ergodox extended is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by Gephorian, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 201.9 × 170.2 mm, with 119 components from 17 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATmega32U4-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the MCP23018-E_SS. By type, the board carries 50 switches, 49 diodes, 8 capacitors, 5 resistors, 4 connectors and 2 ICs.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

From the project

A Bigger ErgoDox, for those who missed the F-keys and dedicated arrow keys but don't want to compromise.

In a world where everyone is removing keys from their ErgoDox, I wanted more.

My goals for this keyboard were to take my existing design from 2018 and remove the Teensy, while making it more compact, a little more stylish, and with several options for cases in mind.

I used an ATMega32u4-au for the mcu because I wanted to be able to solder it by hand if I needed. Same for the MCP23018-e/ss. I stuck with Mini-USB because, again, hand soldering.

Ergodox extended: common questions

What microcontroller does the Ergodox extended use?

The Ergodox extended is built around the ATmega32U4-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Ergodox extended PCB?

The Ergodox extended measures 201.9 × 170.2 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Ergodox extended?

119 components, from 17 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Ergodox extended design files?

From the Gephorian/ergodox-extended repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Ergodox extended design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Gephorian. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Ergodox extended without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
