About the 74HController PCB

74HController is an open source PCB design by Greentalinjo, published on GitHub. It is a 6-layer board measuring 150 × 60 mm, with 137 components from 50 distinct parts.

Other key parts include the 74HC4060D, 74HC14D, 74HC161D, 74HC151D and 74HC259D. By type, the board carries 35 capacitors, 34 resistors, 30 diodes, 18 ICs, 9 jumpers and 6 switches.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

A game controller built entirely from discrete 74HC logic. Eight keys, a diode ROM for a character table, and a real 8-N-1 serial frame out of an RJ45 console port — no microcontroller, no FPGA, no firmware, nothing programmable anywhere on the board.

This project started as an idea for a novel, old-school game controller to plug into a MikroTik RB4011 that I own and am turning into a gaming console. The RB4011 already has what a console needs to hear a controller — a serial console port on an RJ45 jack — so the controller only has to do one thing: turn a button press into a character on…

74HController: common questions

How big is the 74HController PCB?

The 74HController measures 150 × 60 mm, has 6 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the 74HController?

137 components, from 50 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the 74HController design files?

From the Greentalinjo/74HController repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the 74HController design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with Greentalinjo. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
