About the Badge blob PCB

Badge blob is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by HeyPCB, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 63.2 × 85 mm, with 15 components from 11 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATTINY412-SSNR, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 5 diodes, 5 resistors, 2 capacitors, 1 IC, 1 battery holder and 1 switch.

It belongs with the wearables and power & battery designs in this gallery.

Blob, the social battery badge: The name badge that tells people whether to come say hi. KiCad 10, heypcb.ai merch.

The name badge that tells people whether to come say hi.

Blob is a blue blob-shaped name badge with a white panel for your name in marker and a gold "social battery" on its belly. Boop its mouth (the button) to set the battery: green says come say hi, yellow says happy to chat briefly, red says recharging. The chosen LED flashes every few seconds; hold the mouth and its red cheeks blush and the bars wave. An ATtiny412 sleeps in power-down between ticks, so a CR2032 lasts about 11 months of 40-hour weeks, and it switches itself off after 10 hours without a boop. A lanyard slot on top.

Badge blob: common questions

What microcontroller does the Badge blob use?

The Badge blob is built around the ATTINY412-SSNR, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Badge blob PCB?

The Badge blob measures 63.2 × 85 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Badge blob?

15 components, from 11 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Badge blob design files?

From the HeyPCB/badge-blob repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Badge blob design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which HeyPCB chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Badge blob without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
