About the Fridge owl PCB

Fridge owl is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by HeyPCB, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 42 × 53.2 mm, with 10 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATTINY412-SSNR, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 2 switches, 2 diodes, 2 capacitors, 2 resistors, 1 IC and 1 battery holder.

The fridge owl that blinks at you until you've taken your meds and had your water.

Hoot is a yellow owl-shaped fridge magnet with two reminders. Its left wing is a button marked "meds", its right wing "water". Press a wing when you have done the thing: that eye glows and its timer restarts. When the reminder comes due again (meds every 24 h or 12 h, water every 2 h), that orange LED eye blinks until you press. An ATtiny412 sleeps in power-down between one-second RTC ticks, so a CR2032 lasts about 14 months of typical use. Gold ENIG eye rings and beak on yellow mask; magnets go on the flat…

Fridge owl: common questions

What microcontroller does the Fridge owl use?

The Fridge owl is built around the ATTINY412-SSNR, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Fridge owl PCB?

The Fridge owl measures 42 × 53.2 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Fridge owl?

10 components, from 7 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Fridge owl design files?

From the HeyPCB/fridge-owl repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Fridge owl design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which HeyPCB chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Fridge owl without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
