About the Palac PCB

Palac is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by isavcic, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 139.6 × 113.5 mm, with 71 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ProMicro, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 31 switches, 30 diodes, 2 resistors, 1 IC and 1 connector.

It belongs with the keyboards designs in this gallery.

Ortholinear 5x6+1 split keyboard. Work in progress.

Palac came to be as an offshoot of Sofle. The current idea behind it is to create a straightforward split keyboard: no rotary encoders, no backlight, and to explore no stagger in the pinky column: with the pinky positioned slightly below the center of the home row key, in case of five rows one could reach the top and the bottom row with same ease.

Palac: common questions

What microcontroller does the Palac use?

The Palac is built around the ProMicro, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Palac PCB?

The Palac measures 139.6 × 113.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Palac?

71 components, from 7 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Palac design files?

From the isavcic/palac repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Palac design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which isavcic chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Palac without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
