About the Phenakistiscope PCB

Phenakistiscope is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by jfraire, published on GitHub under the CC0-1.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 35.6 × 26.7 mm, with 10 components from 8 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATTINY85-20PU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the LM7805_TO220. By type, the board carries 4 connectors, 3 capacitors, 2 ICs and 1 resistor.

From the project

An ATtiny85 circuit to build a phénakistiscope

A phénakistiscope is a toy invented in the XIX century, and it is one of the first devices to display animations.

It is usually a disk with the animation frames painted in one face, at regular intervals. It has cut-outs, also spaced regularly. The user would see the disk reflected on a mirror, through the slits. When the disk is spun, the animation comes to life!

Phenakistiscope: common questions

What microcontroller does the Phenakistiscope use?

The Phenakistiscope is built around the ATTINY85-20PU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Phenakistiscope PCB?

The Phenakistiscope measures 35.6 × 26.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Phenakistiscope?

10 components, from 8 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Phenakistiscope design files?

From the jfraire/phenakistiscope repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Phenakistiscope design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CC0-1.0 license, which jfraire chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Phenakistiscope without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
