Credit card-sized, USB-powered 4 quadrant source-measure unit hardware and firmware

μSMU is a small source-measure unit designed for the very low-cost electrical characterisation of photovoltaic cells.

Want to buy a pre-assembled and calibrated μSMU with USB and test leads? Grab one from Tindie or Undalogic.

SMUs are "4-quadrant" devices, meaning they can both source and sink current at both positive and negative voltages. This makes them very useful for semiconductor device characterisation - including LEDs, transistors and solar cells.

USMU: common questions

What microcontroller does the USMU use?

The USMU is built around the STM32F072CBU6, from the STM32 family.

How big is the USMU PCB?

The USMU measures 70 × 43 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the USMU?

119 components, from 41 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the USMU design files?

From the joeltroughton/uSMU repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the USMU design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which joeltroughton chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the USMU without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug STM32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
