About the Custom keyboard PCB

Custom keyboard is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by MacroLens, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 96 × 39.8 mm, with 47 components from 22 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the AT90USB1286-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the IS31FL3733-QF. By type, the board carries 15 capacitors, 12 resistors, 4 relays, 4 LEDs, 4 diodes and 3 connectors.

It belongs with the keyboards and iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

A custom mechanical keyboard I am making from scratch. The PCB will have functionality for Bluetooth LE, and USB-C outputs. Based on the AVR micro-controller family.

Thanks to PCBWAY for sending me some prototypes!

Custom keyboard: common questions

What microcontroller does the Custom keyboard use?

The Custom keyboard is built around the AT90USB1286-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Custom keyboard PCB?

The Custom keyboard measures 96 × 39.8 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Custom keyboard?

47 components, from 22 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Custom keyboard design files?

From the MacroLens/custom-keyboard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Custom keyboard design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with MacroLens. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Custom keyboard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
