About the Tms5220-atmega PCB

Tms5220-atmega is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by madworx, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 74.9 × 48.3 mm, with 32 components from 30 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATmega328P-PU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the UB232R, TMS5220, TPS6735, LM7805_TO220 and 74LS138. By type, the board carries 8 connectors, 8 capacitors, 6 ICs, 5 resistors, 3 diodes and 1 inductor.

It belongs with the audio and usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

From the project

TMS5220 exploration unit

This project was created to try out the Texas Instruments TMS5220 Voice synthesis processor (of TI99/4A, Apple II Echo 2, and various pinball/arcade games fame).

First off, a word of warning: The PCB being powered by potentially three sources (PSU, Communication USB, AVR ISP), I've observed some weird behavior with power unexpectedly flowing in the wrong direction, causing intermittent system interruptions, host USB-port lock-up requiring system restart and one burnt MCU.

Tms5220-atmega: common questions

What microcontroller does the Tms5220-atmega use?

The Tms5220-atmega is built around the ATmega328P-PU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Tms5220-atmega PCB?

The Tms5220-atmega measures 74.9 × 48.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Tms5220-atmega?

32 components, from 30 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Tms5220-atmega design files?

From the madworx/tms5220-atmega repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Tms5220-atmega design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with madworx. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Tms5220-atmega without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
