About the USB Saturn obdev flat USB PCB

USB Saturn obdev flat USB is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by mark-dawn, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 72.6 × 47.2 mm, with 17 components from 11 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA328-PU, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 6 resistors, 5 capacitors, 2 connectors, 2 diodes, 1 IC and 1 crystal.

From the project

Yet Another Saturn to USB, and adapter to use the venerable Saturn controller on a modern PC

While I do not expect it to blow anyone's mind, I believe that the code and board turned out quite good and are usable both in practice and for learning purposes.

However the code is structured so it should be easy to add support for other Saturn peripherals; for sure, support for the 3D Controller is planned since I own one of those.

Support for the Saturn Mouse might be harder since the board should reconfigure itself as a pointer HID device at enumeration time.

USB Saturn obdev flat USB: common questions

What microcontroller does the USB Saturn obdev flat USB use?

The USB Saturn obdev flat USB is built around the ATMEGA328-PU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the USB Saturn obdev flat USB PCB?

The USB Saturn obdev flat USB measures 72.6 × 47.2 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the USB Saturn obdev flat USB?

17 components, from 11 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the USB Saturn obdev flat USB design files?

From the mark-dawn/YASU repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the USB Saturn obdev flat USB design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which mark-dawn chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the USB Saturn obdev flat USB without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
