About the Controller PCB

Controller is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by mdrobot7, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 153.8 × 101 mm, with 19 components from 10 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATtiny24A-SS, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 8 switches, 4 diodes, 2 connectors, 2 capacitors, 2 resistors and 1 IC.

From the project

A Raspberry Pi Pico - based graphics adapter and game engine.

Since VGA is a true analog signal, it is not enough to cut up a sacrificial cable and tie it onto the Pico's pins. Some extra hardware is required to make color work, which is why a breadboard is highly recommended.

Controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Controller use?

The Controller is built around the ATtiny24A-SS, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Controller PCB?

The Controller measures 153.8 × 101 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Controller?

19 components, from 10 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Controller design files?

From the mdrobot7/pico-vga repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Controller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which mdrobot7 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
